In my early twenties I joined a toastmasters club. I wanted to test my skills on public speaking and enjoyed the impromptu speaking experience. It was a short lived experience because I soon moved from the area.
As the years went by I realized how reserved I was. In no way would I ever volunteer to do public speaking. My articulation was not good at all. I tended to mumble with a very low tone. No one really paid attention when I spoke.
Then I started speaking to an aunt who lives in a different country. She is old and so I speak to her on whatsapp but mostly I have to leave voice messages for her.
Listening to my messages to her changed everything. The first messages I left for her were terrible. I realized how much I mumbled. So I changed the way I spoke and started to speak more slowly to make myself more clear in what I said.
Little did I realize this was good training for articulating my thoughts. From this exercise I became good in communicating with others at gatherings. People paid attention to what I said. I was surprised to realize people paid attention to me. Then one day I realized this was the result of my communication with my aunt.
Over the months of leaving two to three messages a day for my aunt and replaying them, I have naturally improved my communication skills and confidence. It is still such a pleasant surprise.
