  1. What I like about your post is the way you have broken down subjects and age groups. Most people never learn how to speak in public but simply stumble into it. We’ve all been to weddings where we have had to endure mumbled offerings from the father of the bride, the best man, and the groom who all think they are professionals, crack a few awful jokes, and then sit down in a pool of sweat. But your suggestions of how to start slowly and build up confidence are excellent. I have some school teacher friends who could learn by reading your article and offering it to their students.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words! Public speaking can indeed be a daunting task, and it’s true that many people just stumble into it without proper guidance or preparation. Your anecdote about wedding speeches  illustrates the need for better public speaking skills perfectly.

I’m thrilled to hear that you think my suggestions on starting slowly and building confidence are useful. It’s fantastic that you have school teacher friends who could benefit from this teaching students these skills early can make a significant difference in their confidence and effectiveness as speakers. Thanks again for your thoughtful feedback!

  2. I remembre that I was a shy kid but I was always chosen to present topics at school. So, I learnt to be eased whenever I spoke in public. Also, people always said that I had a strong voice so I can speak even without a mike! This is certainly due to my singing training. I really enjoyed your public speech topic adapted to every speaker and audience. Hope to read more from you in the future.

    1. Thank you for sharing your personal experience! It’s wonderful to hear how you transformed your shyness into a strength through repeated opportunities to speak in public. Having a strong voice, bolstered by your singing training, is undoubtedly a significant asset in public speaking. It not only ensures that you’re heard clearly but also conveys confidence and authority.

Thank you for your kind words!

  3. Having been chosen many times to speak in my different career roles, I understand the importance of your topic, hopefully, it is made easier because you were invited to speak for a specific reason, and so the audience should be in tune with your already known topic.

Impromptu speeches are a little more difficult especially if you don’t feel you are appropriately dressed, or you are having a bad hair day etc. And you will not have the luxury of preparing notes or practising your speech. One of my favourites from history is Sir Winston Churchill, some of his speeches are well renowned and captivated a nation and people all around the world, and the antics he got into to practice his speeches are quite comical in some instances.

Any person contemplating this task would do well to research his skills, out outdated in terms and language, yes, but the the thought and work that went into what he did, no computers, no AI, is truly quite amazing

    1. HI Robby,

Thank you for your thoughtful comment! Your insights highlight a crucial aspect of public speaking—preparation and the ability to connect with the audience. Being invited to speak on a known topic does provide a sense of security, but impromptu speeches truly test our ability to think on our feet.

Your mention of Sir Winston Churchill is particularly inspiring. His ability to captivate and motivate, even in the most challenging times, is a testament to the power of well-crafted speeches. For anyone looking to improve their public speaking skills, studying Churchill’s techniques, despite their historical context, can provide valuable insights into the art of impactful speech-making.

  5. I like your topic ideas and how they are broken down depending on the age group and the purpose. This article would be useful for students in a speech class or someone joining Toastmasters International.  After being afraid to speak in front of people, I suspect that finding a topic is the next biggest concern for someone not used to public speaking.

Your list gives lots of options for different occasions. Even if your specific suggestion is not right for a reader’s event, the list can easily spark an idea for something similar. In addition, I like that you didn’t just give the topic, you also offered a sentence or two to flesh out the idea.

I love public speaking however I still get ‘early nerves’ before I start, once I get going I’m ok.  Do you have any strategies for overcoming this feeling just before you begin?

Regarding the ‘early nerves’ you experience before starting, it’s a common feeling even among seasoned speakers. Here are a few strategies that might help:

This can help reduce anxiety and steady your nerves.Visualize Success: Picture yourself delivering your speech confidently and successfully. Visualization can boost your confidence and reduce nervousness.Positive Affirmations: Remind yourself of past successes and positive experiences in public speaking. Positive self-talk can help shift your mindset from nervousness to confidence.Prepare Thoroughly: Knowing your material inside and out can provide a sense of security. Practice your speech multiple times and, if possible, in front of a small, supportive audience before the actual event.Start with a Smile: Begin your speech with a smile and a friendly greeting. This can help establish a positive connection with your audience and make you feel more at ease.Focus on the Message: Shift your focus from yourself to the message you want to convey. Remember that your primary goal is to share valuable information with your audience.

I hope these tips help you feel more comfortable and confident as you step up to speak. Keep embracing the joy of public speaking, and thank you again for your wonderful feedback!

      Kavitha
